Microsoft krijgt patent op activity notificatie voor IM


"Microsoft heeft een nieuw patent verworven op het gebied van instant messaging wat in de strijd om de IM-markt een waardevol wapen kan zijn, zo is te lezen op WebWereld. Het patent, geregistreerd onder het nummer 6,631,412, beschijft een manier waarop de 'activiteit' van een gebruiker kan worden weergegeven. In simpele taal komt het er op neer dat Microsoft een patent heeft gekregen op de melding die een gebuiker van een IM-programma krijgt zodra de persoon waarmee wordt gechat een nieuw bericht aan het typen is. Deze feature is echter niet alleen in de software van Microsoft geïntegreerd (MSN Messenger en Windows Messenger) maar ook in de IM-programma's van America Online (AOL) en Yahoo. Ook talloze IM-programma's van derden, zoals Trillian, Gaim en Kopete hebben een dergelijke notificatie geïmplementeerd."

Zat deze feature ook ooit lang geleden niet al in powwow van tribal voice? Ik weet niet of ze nog bestaan, maar dat was een soort chat/IM-programma uit de tijd voor ICQ en dus ook ver voordat Microsoft zich ermee ging bemoeien. En die hadden een dergelijke indicator dus ook al. Maar Microsoft zal vast een heel andere feature hebben. Want anders hadden ze d'r vast geen patent op gekregen. Toch?

Sony's PSX coming soon

Sales of the PlayStation 2 have dropped off considerably this year (which isn't that surprising given it's been out for a few years now), so a few months ago Sony revealed plans to come out with a new version of the console called the PSX that would hopefully help jumpstart sales. Besides being able to play games, the PSX will have a TV tuner, a 120GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and be able to double as a digital video recorder. Sony says they'll be showing off the PSX at a big trade show in Japan in next week and that the box should go on sale in Japan by the end of the year and in Europe and the US sometime early next year.

The idea is simple, you redirect your snail mail to them and they scan your physical mail and email it all to you as a text searchable PDF. Targeted at the world wide traveller, it also looks like a good way to help prevent identity theft and getting nasty white powder in the mail."
